Graduation, Setting Long Term Goals

To get a normally 4 year, 120 credit degree it took me 5 years and 160 credits. I not only took a full time load during my college semester, I also took semester classes just to make the 5 years work. Why did it take me so long?

Setting Long Term Goals
Before engaging in a new activity, it is important to set a long term goal and to realize why are you participating in the activiy? What do you hope to get out of it? When I started college my long term goal was to get a degree. With this degree I expect to get a better job.

Reaching the Goal
One thing to realize when setting long term goals is, the details might change along the way. Be ready to keep an open mind. There is not only one way to achieve your long term goal. Once you start something, you can change it, you don’t have to stick with one idea all the way to the end. Computer Science wasn’t working out, so changed my major Marketing, yet doing so did still let me reach my long term goal, just in a different way.

Set a length
Try to set a length of time for reaching your goals. However, if it takes longer to achieve, don’t panic. It might also take longer to achieve your goal than expected. For me, getting my degree in 4 years only seemed natural. It took me 5 years to get a 4 year degree. Though I didn’t fail any classes. I had to make adjustments. Just because I wasn’t going to reach my end goal in 4 years didn’t mean give up.

Goals and Blogging
When starting a blog or new business, ask yourself what is my goal, why am I writing. Is it to find a way to get your writing noticed? Maybe the ultimate goal is to make money. The important question is, what is your long term goal? For my blog my goal is $2000 a month from advertising. I gave myself one year to reach that goal and so far its been 8 months. These goals will help remind you why you are writing, why you are working, in other words give us not only something to work for, but a purpose for doing so.
