Traveling the world without any fixed income is the definition Rolf Potts gives in his book, “Vagabonding, An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long Term World Travel.” Long title, but a book that makes you really think. Rolf urges us to start living our dreams now, start traveling and seeing the world, it is cheaper than you think.
Do we need to be retired to travel?
In America, for example, the problem for most workers is the aren’t getting enough vacation time. Workers in Germany are enjoying 4 weeks of vacation and plenty of holiday time. You’ll find them overrunning resorts in Italy and Mallorca. You might not be fortunate to get this vacation time, but you could negotiate extended leave from which you could use to travel for one month or even two months straight.
Vagabonding and traveling for years…
Rather than rely on a fixed income, some are working to travel. They spend a few months per year working hard, and then travel the rest of the year. Thoreau in Walden’s Pond was working a few weeks a year to pay for the rest of the year at Walden’s Pond. Some work while traveling. If you can teach English, you can use that skill to teach as you go. Others are negotiating the ability to work at home, remotely. Since the rest of the world has joined the Internet, working remotely does not limit us to any geographical location. As a full time blogger the time, I am able to enjoy this freedom and travel without worrying about my income.
The main question is, are we afraid to get out and see the world and remain in the world we’ve built around us?
