Is it worth writing for free?
Published by admin on July 8th, 2008 | Tagged Blogging

Many have asked if it is worth starting your online writing for free? I mean it doesn’t pay the bills, most often it’s your own free created blog where you are writing to a very small audience that probably earns you, with ads, a few cents a month. Is it worth the time and effort writing for free?

Reason to write for free

1. No one wants to hire an untested writer. By writing for free you could build up a massive collections of articles and of course some experience that you can write down in your resume. Try writing for free for a local community paper.
2. Start from humble beginnings. You need to start somewhere. No one becomes head of the company without working their way up (unless you have some really nice connections). Prove yourself and prestige will follow.
3. The more prestigious the place you write for free for, the better it will look. Writing your own blog, vs writing free for an actual publication (writing for the publication is honestly better).

I started off writing and making only $30 per month. Now I make 100 times that amount. Any small start can grow into something bigger and better. So is it worth writing for free?

These are some really good tips. I’ve just started contemplating a professional writing career, myself.

So far, I’ve tried a couple of online publishers out by submitting a few pieces to them.

One I actually like is Triond that actually has a network of niche websites for content, which comes along with a highly supportive community of writers. They also pay you 50% of revenues from your pageviews, so you’re likely not going to pay the rent, but it does put some change in your pocket.

Thank you again for this very helpful post.

You gotta start somewhere. Even 30 bucks a month is a nice start :-)
