Monday, August 25th, 2008

The internet is our play tool at work, and blogging, is often something people do at their job, rather than the work they are supposed to be doing.  But, whether blogging at your job or blogging while not at work, there are some dangers to look out for.

No Protection Against Losing Your Job for Blogging

Very few states have protection against getting fired for blogging when an employer sees objectionable content and is offended.

Can I Lose My Job from Blogging at Home?

According to Lewis Maltby, president of the National Workrights Institute in Princeton, N.J.  “If your boss should see your blog and be offended by something there, in most states you have virtually no protection against being fired.”

What Steps Can You Take to Ensure Safety of Blogging Freely?

For one, not listing your name can help.  Make sure to make the registration of any domains private.  Do not list your name or email on your blog.  Instead, make a contact form for contact you personally.

Refrain from blogging at work. If you are scared about blogging, just don’t say anything bad about your work.  They can’t fire you for blogging about your cats.

What is the Future of Blogging?

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

The future of blogging is so uncertain just as the future of the internet is. One thing is for sure, in the present and in the future blogging is often replacing traditional media sources.

CNET:
“Wharton legal studies professor Dan Hunter puts blogging right up there with the printing press when it comes to sharing ideas and disseminating information. “This is not a fad,” Hunter says. “It’s the rise of amateur content, which is replacing the centralized, controlled content done by professionals.”

“At its most basic level, it’s a technology that is lowering the cost of publishing” and turning out to be “the next extension of the Web,” says Wharton legal studies professor Kevin Werbach. “Blogging is still in its early days. It’s analogous to where the Web was in 1995 and 1996. It’s not clear how it will turn out.”"

As the two professors pointed out in the CNET article, blogging puts media power back in the hands of those who used to read traditional media.  What it used to cost to open your magazine or newspaper, is now literally free thanks to blogging.

In the future, will Blogging completely replace traditional media?

Though big news media companies will adapt, small time bloggers can’t think to compete with those big guns.  How do these small guys create their news?  Often or not, the first to report is those reliable news companies, followed by the opinions of bloggers.
