A new company called AUO (AU Optronics) also famous for LCDs is set to bring down the cost of the next generation e-book readers in half, so that we’d have e-books costing $100 or less. For many the new e-book readers that are being released by Amazon and Sony are just a bit too expensive. Many want to make the switch to reading digital books but not at a $200 price point. $100 would be a good price for me and most consumers to really be motivated financially to make the switch.
E-book readers are a good idea for a number of reasons. 1) Less paper consumed overall since less newspapers and paperback books will need to be printed. 2) More portability as you will be able to carry your entire library of books.
We can tell that AUO’s aggressive approach to the e-book reader market also has to do with trying to regain market that it lost to Prime View that was awarded a manufacturing contract for Amazon and Sony’s products.
