Use a Simple Comment Captcha for Wordpress

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

There is a reason why you should download the Simple Captcha for Wordpress comments.  Spammers will bombard your blog with spam comments the second you disable this plugin.  I’ve been using Simple Captcha for Comments before my blog got taken down by evil hackers.

Since I forgot to reinstall the simple comment wordpress plugin, I’ve got thousands of comments to look through. If I didn’t activate that plugin today, I’m afraid I’d have 10s of 1000s of comments to delete.

What this plugin does is create a captcha for wordpress comments, this stops most spammers.  Though a few will get through, that will be a lot less to look through then the thousands of comments that will get through without a Captcha.

Reasons to Get a Dedicated Server for Wordpress Blogs

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I used to run a VPS, which basically is a server which is shared between many other computers, however, this also means that a virus on one of these shared servers could lead to an invasion on the entire server.  Lately almost all of my blogs hosted on my VPS have been getting infected.  In fact this website was down most of yesterday due to a serious virus attack that took down my entire website.

A dedicated server offers more bandwidth, more security (less chances of viruses leaking in) and more overall security in your website.  If you website makes thousands of dollars a month, just being offline for one day could cost you 100s of dollars in both money you are paying for advertisements like Google Adwords, and lost revenue from ads.  Why not eliminate the risk by going dedicated?

I’ll be making the switch to dedicated soon, hoping to finally be rid of any more chances of getting virally infected.

Cheapest Netbook from Sungworld for $78

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Sungworld has created what is now known as the world’s cheapest Netbook. However with the cheapest Netbook you can also expect the cheapest components, with a netbook that probably runs slower than my mobile phone. The cost? 500 Yuan (or equivalent to $73). The screen size of the Cheapest Netbook comes with Windows CE preinstalled, will be powered by VIA VT8500 ARM 9 based processor at 300MHz, comes with a total of 128MB RAM, 1GB of hard drive, expandable to up to 16gb via sd thanks to a built in sd card reader. Of course Sungworld has has included Wifi built in so you will always be connected.

Overall the cheapest netbook at $78 could be a good portable companion, though it’s going to be extremely slow, run barely any applications besides for typing, and the internet experience you receive is going to be very limited.

Buy the netbook from Sungworld? Probably not, even if it only cost $78.

Best Ways To Get Links To Your Blog

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

If you have a blog or a website you need websites linking to your blog to boost your page rank which will lead to better search results for your website. One way to do this is through getting links to your blogs. But what are the best ways to find and get links linking back to your blog?

Find Your Competitor’s Blog Links

1. You can easily find good links to your blog by searching related blogs for links. In Google, search this phrase: link:relatedblog.com Make sure relatedblog.com is written as a blog that is related. This will list all the links back to their blog letting you know where to start looking to get links to your blog.

2. Search Google.com/blogsearch for related blogs. I tend to add the phrase blogspot in there because blogspot blogs are the easiest to get your comment approved vs wordpress.com blogs which always seem to get marked as spam.
