Review of the Power of Less by Leo Babauta

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Leo Babauta of the blog Zen Habits recently had his book, the Power of Less Published, which lets him put all of his main theories about taking all chaos in your life and converting it into less.  In the Power of Less, he goes over exactly how to:
1. Break down goals into tasks you can manage.
2. Create new productive habits.
3. Increase efficiency.
4. Better achieve your goals.

Could you be doing more than you really have to? I find the Power of Less full of great suggestions on how to better manage your time effectively.  Some recommendations that seem to work are:
1) Checking your email only twice a day.
2) Grouping similar tasks together to get them done faster.
3) Creating a priority list of 3 major things to accomplish and focusing on these tasks first.

One of the major tips Leo Babauta gives in the Power of Less, is how to form goal achieving habits.  How many times have you tried to accomplish something but gave up too quickly?

Leo explains that rather than taking on a new goal too aggressively, we should slowly leo babautaadjust into it.  Rather than just trying to run a Marathon the next day, take it slowly.  Make it something you can accomplish the next day.  Try just running one mile everyday. Then as it becomes a habit, slowly add more miles and distance to it.  If you try to take everything to fast, you are more likely to give up.

Totaling in at 170 pages, the Power of Less by Leo Babauta isn’t necessarily a really long read, but it will hopefully help you identify a few things in your life you could improve and hopefully find yourself with more time to spare in your day, reduce your stress levels, and start your journey toward self improvement.

As Timothy Ferriss of the 4 Hour Workweek put it, “His Mantra Works.”

Becoming Successful By Mimicking Others

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I’ve been thinking about success lately and what it takes to be successful.  It dawned on me that one of the key steps is simply mimicking others.  Yes we mimick and copy others that we want to be like, hoping that if we copy them, we can be like them.

Mimicking Others To be Successful
So many people write about making money online, but would you really want to take advice for someone who barely can make money themselves?  It’s like trying to following advice to lose weight from someone who weights 500 lbs.  Why do so many people follow the trends of the celebrities? Because they are successful, people like them, and they want to be successful and well liked also.

If you start mimicking someone who is successful, chances are, you will be successful too.

Surrounding Yourself With Successful People
When you wanted to be successful in speaking Spanish, wouldn’t you want to surround yourself with other people who speak Spanish successfully?  They say you become who your friends are, so if you wanted to be successful in something wouldn’t you want to surround yourself with people who are already successful in what you want to achieve?

If your goal is to lose weight, it’s going to be pretty hard to successfully lose weight when everyone around you is gaining weight.  Rather, if you surround yourself with skinnier more fit people, you are going to have more chances to become like them.  You’ll learn from them, take after them, and see how they did it.

My Personal Successes
It’s helped me to have a few idols which I want to be like.  I start to follow by their example and capture some of the successes they’ve accomplished.  It’s been a great way to stay focused and keep in mind what I need to do to attain the successes I so desire.

*Keep in mind this works both ways.  If you are negative and deemed unsuccessful, are people going to want to hang around you?

The 3 Minute Slow Carb Breakfast, How to Weight Loss Breakfast

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

One of my goals this year is to lose weight, one of the ways I’m getting started is with the slow carb breakfast.  Though exercise helps, most of the weight you gain or lose is controlled by your diet.  One of the best places to start dieting is breakfast.

Tim Ferriss author of the four hour work week made this essential video on getting started with the Slow Carb Breakfast:

Keep in mind one of the best ways to lose weight is to minimize your caloric intake and spread your meals throughout the day to increase caloric breakdown.

How to Improve Anything by Observing

Friday, January 9th, 2009

When I wanted to improve this blog, I started out by observing other blogs that were at the level I was at.  I started observing structure of their blog posts, how much they had improved their traffic over the course of the last six months, and what kinds of keywords they were focusing on.

One of the best ways to improve anything is simply by overserving those who are doing what you want to improve, better than you. Companies are constantly monitoring what other competitors are doing, and if one of them finds a way to increase their customers, you can be sure the other company is going to try something very similar.

Ways to Improve Anything by Simply Observing
1. Replicate to Success – Pay attention each day to the technique of the person you want copy each day and try to replicate it.  If you can do a process the same as them, you should be able to do it just as well with enough practice.
2. Analyze – Look through all the details.  Are you missing something?  Though from an outside perspective it can look impossible to capture the same success as someone else, but if you break it all down into pieces, you might get a better idea what is going on.  Together a car looks complicated, but when you start understand each piece, it becomes easier to understand.
3. Figure Out the History – What has this person done over time that eventually led to their improvements? Try to figure out what they’ve been doing over time, but either asking that person directly some questions or trying to find outside information.

You should be able to improve almost anything just be observing those that do it right.  Find out how they do it, what they do and you should be able to get at least a little bit of the same success.
