Living in an Obama Nation, Obama Featured Products

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Obama has turned America into an Obama Nation, with companies ready to product off Obama featured products as the popularity of the 44th president soars.  Past opponents to Obama often referred to Obama as an Obamanation (abomination), but I’d like to all the US now an Obama Nation.

Obama Brings the Nation Out of Debt
What other president gets $170 million to spend for an inauguration bash? What other new president is able to generate record sales just with images of himself?  Bloggers around the world are blogging about Obama, everyone seems to ready to make t-shirts, shoes, hats, and even President lager in Kenya nicknamed Obama beer.

Can one man actually add new money into the economy just with his own appearance?

Google Search Power, How Much Power a Google Search Uses

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Have you ever though that a search on Google would use a significant amount of power?  The recent mini-controversy asked Google just exactly how much power a search on their engine really uses.

The answer?: 0.0003 kilowatt hours per search according to an approximation (or about 1kJ).

“For comparison, the average adult needs about 8,000 kJ a day of energy from food, so a Google search uses just about the same amount of energy that your body burns in 10 seconds,” Mr. Hölzle vice president of Google operations had written.

Of course the estimations did not stop here, Hölzle went on to estimate that an average car driven one kilometre generates as many greenhouse gasses as 1,000 Google searches.

Though Google, gasp, uses energy like an other country, the millions of searches each day don’t add up to the environmental effects of most other companies.  Besides, wouldn’t driving to the library to look up the information cost more economic toll than searching?

Why Newspapers and Magazines Are Going Online

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Do you subscribe to a monthy magazine or weekly newspaper?  As it turns out technology and lack of are slowly transfering the world of print media like newspapers and magazines to go straight to digital.

Detroit Newspaper Moves Online
To save costs, pay paperboys less, and use less paper, the Detroit Free Press stopped delivering 7 days a week and now only delivers 3 times a week, offering the daily paper online now in PDF.  This would enable a cut of 9% of the Detroit Media Partnership work force.

Magazines Move Online
It’s nice to have that nice glossy magazine in your hand, but at $1 an issue, http://www.zinio.com offer magazines in pdf online so you can have them stored right on your pc.  Unfortunately doesn’t offer every title, but they offer most of the popular issues.  The best feature is being able to get your magazines anymore, especially for the avid traveler.

The best thing about newspapers and magazines going online is that rather requiring consumption to take place, such as newspapers being printed on, trucks driving around and delivering it to the newstand, you can just get it digitally and on time.  No more having to wait for the delivery boy or the mailman to a magazine that ends up wet or late.
