How to Save Money, Waste It Later

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Living cheap can become part of your normal daily life, it becomes like a religion. We found every way to cut corners and save the most that we can each month. I’ve been known to make a $500 income look 3 times as good as it is. Of course this takes commitment. But, what happens when we have extra money at the end of the month? Do we save it, or do we buy that expensive item we always wanted?

Save Now, Waste Later
As a former college student, I’m a testament to cutting corners on everything, but we all have a week spot. I’ll end up buying an expensive shirt, shoes, or other things I didn’t really need because I… saved the money. It’s a reward for myself.

MSN released ways to save your money
Quit smoking. Pack-a-day habit? In Washington state, that’s easily $5 a day — or about $1,800 a year.
Tame your driving addiction. In other words, carpool or use public transportation. This saves on gas, insurance and maintenance costs — not to mention any money spent on aspirin.
Buy used. You can potentially cut that in half by shopping at consignment shops and auctions, though the life of the goods may be less than buying new. To account for that, the annual savings may only amount to 25%, or $437.
Become a homebody. At just over $1,800 a year on average, entertainment spending has a way of quickly eating through the best-planned budgets. Consider the library for books, music and movies. Eat out less often. (can we all just sit at home all day?)”

Save Money with Black Friday 2007

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

A shopping day with it’s own name, Black Friday. Black Friday is the day when retailers lower the prices on retails goods and make special deals to drive customers by the thousands in to start the Christmas season. Is the Black Friday 2007 really the best time to save money?

My best deals
Have you ever noticed those people sitting in front of Best Buy (electronics store) for more than 12 hours to get a laptop? I’ve been one of those people. It takes determination and a lot of hot coffee to withstand it, especially in Michigan. For waiting 12 hours 2 years ago, I was able to buy a laptop for $200. Worth it? I’m still using today. Last year I was able to get a router for $5 after rebate and 30% off my entire Gap Clothing purchase. Is this the best time to shop? Yes.

Where to save with Black Friday 2007
Believe it or not, the sale ads come out online early every year (2007’s edition is already out), visit BFads.net. The biggest question is, should I wait in a line for 15 hours? Yes and No. Do you really need to save $100 on a Laptop? Think time vs money. If you make a lot of money at your current job, forget it. If you are a poor college student, fill up those flasks and stand in line.

Here is my Black Friday trick, just show up right when the store opens and squeeze in. Bring a friend and have them wait in line before it builds up too large. Store lines can wrap around the store before you know it. Visit malls second, they are never hit as hard as electronic stores. Get your electronic gear first, and your clothing second. But definitely do go shopping on this day. The crowds are crazy and it most certainly will give everyone a headache, but you won’t save more than you do on Black Friday.

Top Ways to Save Money, How to Spend Less

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Total consumer debt in the USA, including home mortgages (over $6.5 trillion), exceeds the cumulative U.S. national debt ($5.7) trillion! Everyone loves to spend, but what happens when we don’t save money? We end up with “a dramatic decline in the U.S. personal savings rate (from nearly 8.5% in the early 1980s to less than zero today)”. My expression for this is, happy now, sad later. We don’t want to save money, we want to be happy now, sad when the bill comes.

Great Ways to Save Money and Spend Less:

1. Change light bulbs to CFL bulbs to save money
2. Use Heat and Air Conditioning sparingly
3. Use the light of Day instead of lights in the house
4. Pay bills online or in person, instead of using stamps
5. Keep razorblades dry and clean so that they last longer
6. Write checks for over the amount instead of using an ATM with fees(or just use cash)
7. Use plastic containers to store left over food for eating later
8. Turn off all lights when not in a room
9. Leave the car at home at least one day out of the week
10. Borrow books from the library instead of buying them
11. Use coupons and check grocery circulars to get the best deals
12. Cook meals at home, cutting back on eating out (Know how to cook?)
13. Take lunch to work
14. Watch movies at home instead of in the theater (yeah its not the same I know).
15. Wash clothes every 7-10 days (I hope you have a lot of clothes).
Trust me, if you save a few cents on everything you do, you will have saved money, spent less, basically more more will be left over for doing something people hardly do, “save it”.
