One worry I’ve heard time and again is the ability to have 911 on your voip line. 911 in the USA being the emergency services number that allows consumers to contact police and fire through one number. Many voip services haven’t been able to provide access to this number leaving many consumers to worry. There fears might be lessened with the new bill that has been passed.
From MultiChannel.com:”The bill, dubbed the New and Emerging Technologies 911 Improvement Act of 2008, was previously approved by the House in November 2007 and this month by the unanimous consent of the Senate.
“This bipartisan legislation approved by Congress ensures that all consumers—including the 16 million cable voice customers—can have confidence that their calls to 911 for emergency service will be answered without regard to who their provider is or what technology they use,” NCTA officials said in a statement.”
What does this mean? 911 emergency services will take your calls whether you are calling from voip, landline, or cell phone.
