Another cell phone to hit the market is OpenMoko a new phone that runs completely on opensource. With their current phone, the Neo FreeRunner it is definitely a rival to the iPhone.  With the cost of only $399 it costs more than the current 3G, but if you consider that this Open Source Iphone Alternative doesn’t require any service plan, you already are going to save quite a bit of cash.
Current features of the NEO FreeRunner:
- 802.11 b/g WiFi for fast web browsing and data transfer
- A faster 400Mhz processor (up from 266MHz)
- 2 3D accelerometers so that the phone can know its orientation for example switching to landscape mode automatically
- 2 LEDs illuminating the two buttons on the rim of the case (one bi color [blue|orange] behind the power button, 1 uni color [red] behind the aux button)
- Tri-band GSM and GPRS for North America (850/1800/1900 Mhz) and the rest of the world (900/1800/1900 Mhz)
- USB Host function with 500mA power allowing you to power USB devices for short periods (will drain the FreeRunner battery faster)
We expect OpenMoko to support voip as well which will be nice for any phone user looking to save on phone calls.
Still, OpenMoko is entirely in it’s infancy and we are still waiting to see what applications will be designed for the OpenMoko, Open Source iPhone Alternatives…
