TringMe is launching their own incoming worldwide phone services for voip numbers around the world.  That means you can keep a local number, no matter where you are located.

According to TringMe “In simple terms, any TringMe user can request for a phone number from a country of their choice. For e.g. if you want to have a local number in US, you can request for a phone number from US and TringMe will allocate one for you. You can then decide where you want to be reached when someone dials that number. This can be easily configured from your TringMe profile page - calls can be received on any of TringMe’s supported device - MobileVoIP, Instant Messenger (GoogleTalk), on you landline or even on your mobile .
..You can be located anywhere in the world and your friends, family or customers can still reach you on a local number. You may have several incoming telephone numbers used for specific purposes. For example customer service, sales, etc. With TringMe, you can easily route all of these numbers to a single termination point and yet give a mature look to your organization.”

We’ve already had a service like TringMe out for sometime with services such as Skype, but it’s nice to see TringMe entering in as well.

The services goes live today at  7 PM IST

Landline phones usually do not allow the ability to receive text messages, that is until we use text to landline services which are provided by companies like Sprint and Verizon.

What is Text to Landline?

The Text to Landline service converts text messages into voice messages which can be sent to most listed residential phone numbers in the United States.

How do I use this service?

  1. Create a text message as if you were sending a text message to another mobile phone
  2. Enter the phone number of the person, including the area code: Example: 9991234567
  3. Press Send

Currently there aren’t really any free options for this besides a service such as wakerupper.com which will allow us to send free wakeup calls by converting text to speech.

We have been able to send free text message for quite some time with such services as http://textforfree.net/, which allows you to send a free sms to most cell phone services.

Sure Voip provides cheap calls, but what current uses are their for voip, what kind of practical uses does voip open up, that haven’t been opened before?

McDonald’s Drive Thru Voip Uses

Did you know that McDonalds has call centers for some of it’s Drive Thrus?  Rather than having someone inside the store answer calls, it can be done quicker with a drive thru call center.  That person you talk to may even be living in India!

voip

1800 Call Centers

That free customer support number you called could be connecting you to someone across the globe, thanks to voip. Many of these call centers are filled with people who actually learn your accent so you can’t tell the difference when you call (though we all can).

Another current and practical use for Voip includes teleconferencing

Why should you have to be somewhere to work? Voip allows you to communicate without being in the same room.  When combined with video, it is the perfect subsitute for physical presence.

And might we add another use that is the most pratical of all?

Keeping in touch with friend and family, abroad and at home!

If you ever need to make international calls from your mobile phone, you knew it wouldn’t be worth since global calls from a mobile phone can be one of the most costly calls you could ever make.

Gorilla Mobile has set out to make calling internationally without a calling card a bit cheaper.

Using Gorilla Mobile itself is relatively easy

1. You dial the Gorilla Mobile access number 2. You wait for the Dial tone 3. You dial the international number

Rates for Gorilla Mobile?

Gorilla Mobile does seem to have some of the highest rates around.  Though, if you need to make a call from your sell, it is an easier option than buying calling cards…

There is a new wireless service called Earth Tones, which offers prepay cell phone service for most of the USA.  There is however something different about Earth Tones as they aim to be the cheapest prepay mobile service.  All the profits of Earth Tones are donated directly to eco friendly groups.

Unique is the fact that you can call any US senator for free. The Anywhere 1200 for $85 rivals T-Mobiles $100 for 1000 minutes. Even for $55 you can buy a nice 800 minutes.

At first I was skeptical about the price, looking for a disadvantage is call coverage area, but after reviewing the map, Earth Tone Wireless must be paying for the use of cell phone towers such as tower sharing with ATT or Sprint. They seem to have an excellent coverage area.

Billing is done in 6 second increments, it is explained on their site as “After the first 30 seconds all domestic calls are billed in 6-second increments. (Most phone companies round your call up to the next minute, so for a 2 and a half minute phone call they will charge you for three minutes. By not rounding up your calls, we save you up to 15% off what you would be paying a company with the same rates and full minute billing.)” This should also save you some cash with your wireless bill.

Should you switch to http://www.earthtones.com/? It is definitely worth a look into.

DID is a way to directly call from a phone to reach a voip network.  The unique thing however, is that even though you might have a Michigan Voip Number reachable locally by normal Michigan phones, a DID number will allow someone, in Brazil for instance, to call a local number and still reach your Michigan number without paying any international fees.

To use a DID number you’ll need to know the correct number to dial which is not always the same as the number you dial on a traditional phone.

1)FreeDigits Free sips numbers and call numbers

2) IPKALL: a free did number for Washington state.
3)GrandCentral: Still in beta, but the ultimate one number for all phones.

4)IPComms:A free did with tons of choices.

5)Orbtalk: A free did for UK people.
6)Coms: Another good UK did number

7)Messagenet: Did numbers for Italy and UK folks.

8) Num2IM: A free France Did.

9) LocalPhone: LocalPhone offers a cheap international call service and also offers a UK Geographic number which you can forward to your phone.

10) Speex: A cool Israeli number.
11) TelFree: Did we say South Africa?  Awesome.

With mobile phone data plans, why are we still paying for calls?  Getting a data plan will allow you the option for receiving incoming and outgoing calls on a mobile phone networks data plan.

Take fring for example. The downloadable software will allow you to access such popular programs as skype and instant messaging directly on your phone.  That means if you are connected to a data plan, you will be able to make free calls.

T-Mobile Sidekick Pay as You Go Unlimited Voip

Take the T-Mobile pay as you go internet plan, “$1.00 per day for unlimited nationwide e-mail, web browsing, text messaging and instant messaging”  That means you pay $1 the days you want to access the internet. So, in essence, you could wind up paying only $30 a month for unlimited internet, and combine that with voip, and you’ve got one cheap calling plan.  In any emergency you’ve always got those 15 cents a minute prepay calls.

Don’t Rely on Your Data Plan Alone

Though getting a data plan sounds like a great idea, you might lose coverage in some areas, thus leaving you unable to call. Make sure to have some prepay minutes on hand as a just in case… I prefer T-Mobile’s 10 cents per minute after you buy 1000 minutes for $100.  It lasts a year, and makes for a great backup.

Another cell phone to hit the market is OpenMoko a new phone that runs completely on opensource.  With their current phone, the Neo FreeRunner it is definitely a rival to the iPhone.   With the cost of only $399 it costs more than the current 3G, but if you consider that this Open Source Iphone Alternative doesn’t require any service plan, you already are going to save  quite a bit of cash.

Current features of the NEO FreeRunner:

  • 802.11 b/g WiFi for fast web browsing and data transfer
  • A faster 400Mhz processor (up from 266MHz)
  • 2 3D accelerometers so that the phone can know its orientation for example switching to landscape mode automatically
  • 2 LEDs illuminating the two buttons on the rim of the case (one bi color [blue|orange] behind the power button, 1 uni color [red] behind the aux button)
  • Tri-band GSM and GPRS for North America (850/1800/1900 Mhz) and the rest of the world (900/1800/1900 Mhz)
  • USB Host function with 500mA power allowing you to power USB devices for short periods (will drain the FreeRunner battery faster)

We expect OpenMoko to support voip as well which will be nice for any phone user looking to save on phone calls.

Still, OpenMoko is entirely in it’s infancy and we are still waiting to see what applications will be designed for the OpenMoko, Open Source iPhone Alternatives…
