When I saw the title I thought, illegal drug trading game? No, actually crack attack is a clone of tetris attack for the computer that was original made for the snes.
Three Tetris Modes
1. Solo Mode – Play alone for the highest score
2. Two Player Mode / VS computer – Try to survive the longest
3. X-treme Mode – New types of blocks are introduced
If you are a fan of fast paced puzzle games, then look no further than crack attack.
I’ve been covering many first person shooters lately on ClickforNick’s Free Software Blog, mainly, because these free first person shooters. Let’s take a look at Warsow.
Warsow, a cartoony Shooter
Warsow uses the Quake 2 engine, yet redesigned the graphics to give them a cartoony feel. Have you seen the movie a Scanner Darkly? Both this game at the movie has a similar feel.
According to Warsow:
“Warsow is developped under the motto “by gamers for gamers” by a team coming from all kinds of gaming backgrounds. To attain the “by gamers for gamers” spirit, the community are our betatesters, both through internal testing sessions (with community members) and in the feedback on the public releases.”
Sauerbraten, the name threw me off at first since in Germany it is a roast meat. Online its a first person multi-player shooter. Just one week ago they’ve release the latest version of Sauerbrater called the Assassin Edition.
Eye Candy?
From the screen shots, Sauerbraten is no roast meat, rather a very well designed game with some of the best graphics I’ve seen for free first person shooters. With games this good looking, why should anyone need to pay for shooting people online? Why not take out that aggression for free? If you’ve played Cube, the predecessor, then it is time to make an upgrade and start playing Sauerbraten.
Originally Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was meant as a full first person shooter and multi-player game, but ID, the game creators, ran into problems and decided that it would be better just to release the game as free multi-player online shooter.
Online Game Play
You fight as the Axis or Allies to either complete or stop mission objectives. Tough we already know the real outcome of the war, you can change some history in the game. Actually most of the events in this game never really happened. There are not only official maps available, but also since its release, plenty of unofficial maps have been created by the internet community.

Ever been in Best Buy and just wished you could be playing Guitar Hero. I’ve tried to jump on that game plenty of times, but there are always small kids in my way who just won’t get out of my way. If you’ve had these problems like me, thankfully we can play the equivalent of Guitar Hero free.
No Guitar Required
Frets on Fire uses the keyboard which makes for awkward guitaring yet, that doesn’t stop you from holding it up like a guitar. Start playing your favorite songs now with Frets on Fire.
It’s the aliens versus the Humans in this open source first person shooter. Its basically just team battle with the humans trying to eliminate the alien species and vice versa. It uses the Quake 3 engine to bring more realistic levels and characters. My favorite feature of Tremulous is that the alien creatures can scale the walls.
Completely Free?
As with all of the posts on this blog, none of the games have spy ware or any other annoying catch to it. Tremulous using open source software without any extra spy ware.
Want to relive World War 2? DDay Normandy is an open source first person shooter and a complete modification of Quake 2. Though the game is no longer being developed, there have been slight updates from time to time including new maps and models.
Germans vs Americans
Just like the war, its an all out German American Battle. You fight with the backdrop of a European village with guns and knives. There have been additional expansions for including Russians and the Japanese if you feel like getting more countries involved in this multi player shootout.
The U.S. Government developed their own first person shooter? America’s Army was developed as a way to help with U.S. Army recruitment. Is this a good way to get people to join the army, through video games? It’s online game play has actually been rated in the top ten of online multi-player games.
Want to be in the Army, but not join?
That is the furthest I’d recommend taking a game like this. Though the video game looks great, can you really believe that real life is just like the game? That is for you to decide. In any case, get the video game version of the U.S. Military with America’s Army.
Get America’s Army
It’s the secret Maryo chronicles, the open source version of Super Mario World. If you’ve missed the SNES version, here is the windows version developed by programmers and if you know programming you yourself can add to the Chronicles of Secret Maryo Chronicles.
In-Game Editor
The best feature is Secret Maryo’s In-Game Editor. It’s like building your open Super Mario World.
