I wanted to watch BBC Online, but little did I know, that the BBC iPlayer for watching full episodes of BBC online would be restricted to only those in the UK? The online BBC iPlayer was launched just this year and is currently available only for those living in the UK.

Of course it’s only available in the UK. We don’t pay the license fee for the rest of the world’s benefit.

    2. Kevin Says:

well that’s true, but I live in UK, pay my TV licence, but travel abroad Monday to Friday for business, so why shouldn’t I be able to view the programmes I pay for over the net,

I am sure there is someway to implement via TV licence details.

    3. Em Says:

Yes, you’d need a way to tie a licence number to a PC (or two) – clearly you’d have to have a bit more than just the licence number, to prevent users sharing them. But, something like MS Reader does for eBooks – when you can activate the reader on a certain number of machines (I’ve an idea it’s 5) – which would be enough for the average family, I’d have thought – especially as you’d only need the activation when you’re outside the UK.

Of course, if they start to enable moving the downloaded (rather than streamed) versions to a different machine; then it would be less needed.

“Of course it’s only available in the UK. We don’t pay the license fee for the rest of the world’s benefit.”

This seems exceptionally small-minded. I would gladly pay for this service.

Nobody has said it needs to be free, but it would be great if it was available as a paid service for those of us living elsewhere.

    5. bryan Says:

As I understand as long as the program is not live then you are not required to have a license to view the BBC Iplayer. I think the BBC have to come to terms with the fact that the license is an antiquated concept, the BBC need to catch up with new solutions because I do not think the next generation are going to be prepared to continue paying in this way when everything else is free or payment is a choice.

    6. Stephen Says:

I live in North Carolina but have traveled to the UK several times. I love British television. I watch it here on PBS, but would like to watch online. Why can’t we pay the tv tax or fee and get to watch my favorite shows from the UK? They still get paid for it……

    7. Christine Says:

I love, love, love the Britsh shows, all of them!! I’m not British, but I think your shows are the greatest, I love your culture and everything British.
I would gladly pay a fee or bill just to be able to see more, I can only watch old re-runs on PBS.

    8. Gareth Says:

There are many people in yhe UK who avoid paying the license fee and still watch UK tv on sets and online.

The BBC have severely underestimated the desire to watch UKTV abroad. In my adopted country of Spain, most bars will show Uk channels courtesy of BSkyB, who only require a UK address to issue a smart card which can be used anywhere in the world via an appropriate dish and digi box.

Until recently I was paying a subscription via a website to watch UKTV, I beleive the service was operating from Canada, the BBC have since ensured this service has been taken off. I am quite willing to pay a subscription to the BBC to watch their programmes abroad.

It is the age of the internet, the BBC should get with it and make themselves exra income.

    9. I'd Do Anything Says:

Last year, we saw the whole Any Dream Will Do show because a friend was sending us the DVDs she herself recorded. This year we weren’t so lucky and had to follow I’d Do Anything in pieces on YouTube. Believe us, here in Spain we would do anything to be able to watch not only the popular westend singing contests but also all the other great BBC programs and shows.
      Please, make it possible.

    10. Louie Says:

The technology is there for the BBC to stop living inthe last cetury and offer I-Player worldwide via a confermed payment for the tv licence. As a Brit Expat, I miss the telly and BBC America is no more that a stage for 30 year plus re-runs. I.m not saying we should get it free, but please BBC surely good business is all about making money, just think of the amount you could make just by offering those outside th UK the benefit of a monthly or yearly subscription method for paying for the tv licence and finally being able to view BBC programs all over the globe.

    11. ILoveUKTV Says:

I totally, totally agree! I would pay the license fee if it meant I could watch streaming (or downloaded) BBC shows. I got addicted to “I’d Do Anything” [and was gutted when Jessie didn't win :( ] and would love to be able to watch all the shows they talk about on BBC2, which I’ve listened to online from work for the past 3-4 years. I wish there was a way to do it!

    12. geertie Says:

Look for hotspot shield in google…there is one, where you have to pay a little but can try it out for free for a little while, that also helps you to really get the UK broadcasting.

    13. geertie Says:

Look for hotspotshield in Google…you will find one that also makes it possible to go watch BBC abroad. It is for a little while free, then just a little payment. I dont have it because I can watch BBC on cable..but I know its possible.

    14. Lester Hart Says:

I will pay for BBC tv. I live in New York and miss it so much. It really hurts to know that its not available because of an oversight. My friends are also really hungry for some BBC tv.

    15. Mike Says:

I’m british currently working / living in Mauritius & miss British TV loads even though I’m currently paying my UK TV licence. It really is only a matter of time before someone hacks or cracks their way into veiwing British TV abroad. It’s only then that the BBC will be sorry because firstly it will be free so they’d have missed their oppotunity to sell the product and secondly their quality shows will be streamed with no quality control leaving the BBC left behind in the global race for customers and just becoming another free youtubey type joke.. I’m more than willing to pay for a 2nd licence fee to view abroad but it looks like i’m gonna have to go underground and find an ilicit way instead.. what a shame

    16. teresa Says:

It would be great if the BBC offered their online tv service to those out side of the UK, for a fee. However here in the U.S I would think that licencing for “BBC America”, would prevent that.

    17. Expat Says:

You bunch of wankers!!!! I pay the tv licence, me, and I don’t want to share it!!! You winning little twats!!! Go and get a life§§

    18. Leith Says:

How rude expat and totally unnecessary.
Not everyone on here wants anything free. They will pay too. So theres no need to be so horrid and possesive as we dont want YOUR licence dear! You can keep it and frame it! ha

    19. Traveller Says:

Hey Expat. You are a Grade-A idiot. In the absence of a legitimate and reasonably-priced paid option people will resort to looking for a way to getting it for “free” – and it is not really FREE because folks have to invest their time and resources (and threats of exposing their systems to viruses etc.) just to get access to UK content.

Regardless, I challenge you to answer this simple question you smartarse: I pay my license fee, but happen to spend most of my time abroad. How do I get access to what I am entitled to then?

    20. Brit Says:

I agree that BBC should be available to Brits when they travel to other countries. Also if the BBC changed their charging method from the outdated licence fee to something more up to date like Virgin or Sky, this wouldnt be an issue. That said even as a paying Sky TV customer I cant access the Sky player abroad either. If I pay for something in the UK I dont see why I cant use it abroad, even if I have to pay a little extra for the privilege. I pay for my Mobile phone in the UK, what would happen if Vodaphone decided that as a UK customer I could only access the Vodaphone network whilst in the UK. They allow roaming service, they charge extra for it but they allow it none the less, why cant the TV providers like BBC and Sky do the same thing?

    21. christine Says:

Good grief! You have to pay for a license to watch TV? I am one confused American.

    22. BritInSpain Says:

I would love to get the Iplayer stuff as well. Like just now when I have been bumped off the tv by my evil tennis loving husband. I do understand why the BBC and SKY dont have the option though. It is all down to money. Yep – mostTV programmes are sold to other networks to show in their country and thus if people could just logon and view them via another country’s network website you “home” country would be loosing out. SKY turns a blind eye to the huge number of people in Spain that view their stuff via huge dishes. It is a law suit waiting to happen. Digital plus when they get their act together and transmit in dual language will force Sky to reduce its coverage to the UK. Until then they know none of us will switch to Digital plus. What I think the BBC could do is allow pay per download on programmes that they havent sold to other networks after all they still do make a lot of really interesting programmes and many are never sold abroad.

    23. Sillhuve Says:

I live in Sweden and here we pay aprox. 166 GBP a year for the licence fee. I think I would be prepare to pay an additional equal fee to watch the BBC channels online.

    24. yank-in-NZ Says:

As an expat from the United States now living in New Zealand I too would be willing to pay a fee to watch bbc online.Paying to access the bbc anywhere in world is differnt than paying a licence fee to watch tv (world news)at home. Btw, in my personal opion paying a licence fee for tv is fukked up. Its dening ppl a human right FREEDOM OF INFORMATION INFORMATION!

    25. Florida Rob Says:

The whole idea of limiting BBC’s worldwide “fan base” is absurd. There’s money to be made here obviously. I only wish to watch my beloved Cardiff city live on BBC 2 on rare occasions. “Expat” thats a confusing name for someone who “pays their TV license and doen’t wish to share it” – seriously British TV licenses aren’t worth the paper they are written on – last I was home you pay for a wopping 5 channels….whoopdy doo pal!

    26. mark dickey Says:

      cant wait to watch bbc.
