For already two years we’ve had the Blu-ray format. First, Blu-ray had to compete with the competing HD-format. It was not an easy start for the Blu-ray, as it entered the market in 2006 alongside a strong competitor, the now failed HD DVD. Thanks to the support of the powerful film industry, the Blu-ray format becamse the champion against the competitors, but now this high-resolution disc format faces a much larger problem: the dominance of the DVD.
Consumers are still a bit hesistant. In addition to the superior picture quality, the Blu-ray format also offers HD-sound formats Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA that makes movies in the living room seem more realistic and can be reproduced impressively. Video quality is at 1080p, much better than the 720 resolution format offered by standard dvds.
A dual layer Blu-ray disc can hold as much as 50 GB of space.
Will Blu-ray make some sort of advances or will everyone just switch away from discs and stick with just stick to downloading films and staring them on harddrives?
