A format for playing HD is called BRRips an the BDRips format. Since recently released of the BRRips, BDRips formats have been made into avi which allows any DVD player compatible with divx files able to play these high quality files.
BRRips and BDRips are being done from a Blu-Ray disk and at the 1080p resolution. This means that the file is in much better quality than standard dvd rips. The best part about these rips is the fact that they are highly compatible and a much needed improvement on standard dvd rips.
So my advice is, when you go to download torrents or from anywhere, look for BRRips and BDRips
