DVD Sales Decline, Netflix the End of DVD Sales?

By admin | Jan 29, 2009

With services like Netflix letting you stream movies online, and even iTunes letting you purchase movies in a digital download, DVD sales have been declining.  Netflix puts up a good fight against physical media, and if things go their way, these DVD declines will mean the end of physical media and everything moving online to purchase or rent.

Future DVD Sales Competition
Three studios MGM, Paramount Pictures, and Lions Gate got together to create a new movie channel that will be subscription based on the web. It will be called Epix and launches in May. On the site, 15,000 movies will be available from the three studio’s huge libraries, all of which will be available to stream over the Web, this is until the channel really launches.

Amazon Digital Downloads for DVD
Even Amazon offers their own digital downloads store in order that for a low price you can either rent the movie or download your movie for a fee.

Will DVDs go away in the future?  I think most likely we will switch more and more away from physical media, but in the near future, DVDs should be around to stay.
