We’ve noticed now that almost every network television show immediately goes online with full episodes right after it airs. Before, even one year ago, the selection of full episodes online, that is legally viewable online, was significantly smaller. Now it seems almost as if it is required that network television shows go online.
Reasons Why Network Television Show Might Not Go Online
1. Hard to secure music deals. Shows filled with music that requires obtaining not only the television show rights, but the music rights rarely go online. Shows like American Idol remain offline simply because it would be too costly to put episodes online.
2. Too many broadcasts. Many Soap Operas remain offline because network television channels are not willing to upload daily content of the soaps. Expect this to change in the future/
3. Fear. I would summarize a big reason why shows don’t go online is the fear that viewers will stop watching the show on television and skip directly online. They still make a profit for internet television, but significantly less as what television brings in.
In the future, expect that every television show that comes to network television also comes to the internet.
